Who We Are:
The Association of Oregon Corrections Employees was founded in the 1990’s in Salem, Oregon. At that time, a group of corrections professional at the Oregon State Penitentiary decided to explore ways of improving union representation and protection of fellow employees from potentially unfair labor practices.
This group of professionals did not have a specific political agenda, nor were they motivated by any one particular organizing individual. They were, however, very devoted to the idea of promoting the corrections employee as a respected and expressly skilled criminal justice professional.
Rather than forming an agenda of fighting against management, these employees respected the ideals that represented the very best in what it means to be a good corrections professional—the same ideals as promoted by the Oregon Department of Corrections managers, and as taught over the years in the department’s staff training.
As AOCE membership grew to encompass other institutions as well as the penitentiary, the membership grew in diversity of backgrounds, experience, skills, and special abilities.
Today, the AOCE represents:
- Penitentiary Custody Staff (Correctional Officers),
- Non-custody staff, including Correctional Counselors, Law Library Coordinators, and Support Staff,
- Oregon Corrections Enterprises,
- Oregon State Correctional Institution,
- Mill Creek Correctional Facility, and
- South Fork Forest Camp.
