Announcement originally sent about this event:
Sgt. Robert Canine
Oregon State Penitentiary staff recently approached Director Williams and Deputy Director Morrow with the idea of selling a Department of Corrections Challenge Coin.

These staff were motivated by their support for the national non-profit organization, Homes for Our Troops.

Homes for Our Troops is a non-partisan, 501 (c)(3) organization founded in 2004. They are committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since September 11, 2001.

It is their duty and honor to assist severely injured servicemen and servicewomen and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and to coordinate the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

The men and women who are overseas fighting for our country sometimes pay the ultimate price and others return with severe injuries. These brave soldiers deserve to live in a home that is created to accommodate their particular disability.

Our donations will benefit two Oregon servicemen who were injured in the line of duty. Even though Homes for Our Troops is nationwide, these two local servicemen are the ones who will benefit from all of our raised proceeds.

Each challenge coin is made by a company here in Oregon. They are for sale for $7.00 each.

Buy as many as you want to give as gifts to friends and family!

Your institution or workplace contact has these coins available for viewing and purchase.

Once the initial count has been sold, your institution contact will take your coin order and send the amounts back for a second order.
When the second order is filled and distributed, if you wish to purchase more coins, please contact Dave Ramseyer, John Mynatt or Jen Black.

Please support these brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country.

SPC Kevin Pannell

Sandy, OR

Army SPC Kevin Pannell was serving in Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division when he was severely injured on June 13, 2004. Kevin's 12-man unit was on a routine foot patrol in a dangerous area of central Baghdad when he was ambushed in an alleyway.

Pannel heard two "clinks" behind him. He said the sounds were from grenades, thrown by insurgents, landing at his feet. One of the grenades rolled against his right foot and exploded, knocking him down and ripping his legs apart.

After tourniquets were applied by his fellow soldiers, he was transported in a Humvee to the 31st combat support Hospital in Baghdad's Green zone. He was eventually transported to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he underwent 13 operations including the amputation of both of his legs; one below and one above the knee.

With the generous donations of the Oregon Dept. of Corrections staff and through challenge coins sales and bar-b-ques we were able to send Homes for our Troops a sizable check in the name of Kevin. Thank you so much for all that participated in honoring this American hero.
